About the Role:

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Terraline, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of heavy commercial vehicles. You’ll spearhead the design and development of critical vehicle chassis and braking components, guiding their journey from initial concept to full-scale production. You’ll collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of engineers, leveraging a diverse range of manufacturing processes to craft innovative solutions. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the charge in braking system innovation: You will be at the forefront of designing and developing cutting-edge braking systems for our revolutionary autonomous, Class 8 electric truck.
  • Leverage the latest technology: Evaluate and implement the most advanced braking technology available to create a system that is safe, efficient, and reliable.
  • Architect the future: Design a braking system that seamlessly integrates with the unique requirements of an autonomous electric vehicle.
  • Full lifecycle development: Own the design from concept through to production, ensuring the braking system meets the highest standards.
  • Mentorship: Share your expertise and provide guidance to junior engineers.
  • Design & Development: Utilize CAD (CATIA V5/V6 preferred) to design robust vehicle components and their associated mounting hardware.
  • Project Management: Oversee the CAD release process and manage supplier relationships.
  • Validation: Create comprehensive test plans and ensure components meet stringent quality standards.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work seamlessly with various teams to define and achieve technical objectives.
  • Problem-Solving: Analyze and resolve complex technical issues, identifying both immediate and long-term solutions.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

 

Essential Skills:

  • Expertise: Deep understanding of commercial pneumatic braking systems and design criteria.
  • Design mastery: Proven ability to design brake system components and mounting hardware using CAD (CATIA V5/V6 preferred).
  • System-level thinking: Comprehensive understanding of the chassis system and its interactions.
  • Collaborative spirit: Ability to effectively collaborate with the controls team on brake control systems.
  • Ownership: Take charge of CAD and drawing release for your components.
  • Supplier management: Drive component validation through effective supplier management and test plan development.
  • Problem-solving: Tackle complex challenges and develop innovative solutions from first principles.
  • Communication: Clearly communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Hands-on approach: Comfortable using basic hand tools and working in the shop when needed.

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced CAD skills: Proficiency with CATIA V6 on the 3Dexperience platform.
  • Manufacturing knowledge: Familiarity with casting, forging, CNC machining, plastic injection molding, and sheet metal forming.
  • Industry experience: Automotive or transportation development experience in a chassis-related role is a plus.
  • Tire engineering: Knowledge of tire engineering, including Pacejka models and performance characterization.
  • Project management: Experience managing projects and delivering results on time.
  • GD&T: Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5.
  • Passion: A drive to excel and make a difference.

Qualifications:

  • BS/MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience, with at least 3 years focused on chassis components in the automotive, heavy trucking, or construction equipment industry.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Physical Demands:

We are all hands on deck at Terraline in our efforts to create exciting change within the trucking world. The ideal candidate will be both adventurous and versatile. Daily activities could range from a full day of designing components at your desk, to full days working in the shop working with large trucks, and everything in between. Each day will be an adventure and you should feel comfortable handling moderately sized components within your daily routine.

Travel Required:

Subject to periodic travel requirements. Company-related travel expenses reimbursed per the company’s Travel and Expense Reimbursement policy.
